Saturday, 18/11, kicks off at Ku.be with a conference that features lectures from workshop leaders (Mike McCormick, Timo Tuhkanen, Harry Lehmann) and a panel with (Jessie Marino, Olga Szymula, Kirstine Fogh Vindelev) several composers who have premieres at the festival.

10.00-11.00: Mike McCormick: FLOSS every day 

In recent years we have been inundated with news about NFTs, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, signaling a significant shift towards digitalization in the art community. Artists have always been quick to embrace cutting edge technologies, and like any other material, the tools we choose and ways in which we engage with them can have a profound effect on our practices. With this in mind, I want to share my enthusiasm for FLOSS: Free, Libre, Open Source Software.

All of us engage with open source technologies on a regular basis - the internet wouldn’t run with them, for example - but how well do we understand what "open source” actually means? What are the implications of using FLOSS, and what impact could these tools have on the creative process? What are the benefits of having an open source artistic practice and what might that look like?

In this lecture I will share the history and philosophy of the open source movement alongside ways to engage with open source ecosystems and communities. I will also showcase open source tools available for creative work, including softwares and hardwares I use regularly in my own work. Finally, I will share my motivations and methods for moving towards a completely open-source practice, inspired by the Xenofeminist writings of the Laboria Cuboniks working group.

11.00-12.00: Harry Lehmann: Doing Music Philosophy

In the last ten years Harry Lehmann has published two complementary volumes on music philosophy: The Digital Revolution of Music (2012) and Music and Reality (2023). In this talk, he will give an overview of the main theories, terms, models, and guiding ideas that he has developed in these books. In addition, he will also retrospectively analyze the process of writing that led to the development of this music philosophy. In other words, what is meant by “doing music philosophy”?


12.00-13.00: Lunch

13.00-14.00: Timo Tuhkanen: Sonic Microtonality

Lecture-performance by artist-composer Timo Tuhkanen. Microtonality, psychoacoustics, resources, and communality are lenses in which musical ideas outside dominant keys and cultures can be nurtured and strengthened.

14.00-15.00: Panel 

Panel discussion with Jessie Marino, Olga Szymula and Kirstine Fogh Vindelev - several composers who have premieres at the festival.
