“Our writing tools are also working on our thoughts.”
  • Frederich Nietzche

This year MINU_festival continues our tradition of expanding into different formats by offering a number of workshops that encircle the notion of technological sovereignty. Participation in the workshops is free and takes place over multiple meetings from 16-19/11. Three of the workshops focus on specific mediums for instrument design (acoustic, hardware, software) and the fourth deals with musical aesthetics and philosophy (especially in relation to digitalization and reality). The application forms for the workshops can be found here.

The deadline for applications is 20/10/23 (October, 20, 2023). We accept later applications but only if workshops have available spots.

All workshops have limited available spots.

Workshop 1: Microtonal Music Studios workshop with Timo Tuhkanen

This two-day workshop looks at music through microtonality, psychoacoustics, resources, and communality in music to design and make practical tools and instruments with which musical ideas outside dominant keys and cultures can be nurtured and strengthened.

The workshop takes place in V7, an artist studio complex, where participants will have guided access to equipment for woodworking and 3D-printing. Come and build your own microtonal instrument.

Workshop 2: っ◔◡◔)っ♥ NÆGTULARIAN ZKOOL OF EMOTIONAL MACHINE ACTIVATION ♥ workshop with Dalin WaldoOoOoOo

Can synthesizers transmit emotional energy, the so-called “eloptic energy”? Can we consider improvisation as a way of conversing with our synthesizers? - and can we build synthesizers in the future based on the understanding of eloptic energy Thoughts about esoteric engineering, deep listening and the aesthetic of electricity. Followed up by an introduction workshop of how to use ENNER Synth and live processing of it.

Workshop 3: Digital Lutherie: A brief introduction with Mike McCormick

The flexibility and capability of open-source software allows us to extend our artistic expression beyond the creation of our works and towards the creation of the tools that we use in our process. Working with tailor-made tools brings us closer to the materiality of our work and can have a profound impact on the outcome of our work.

Over the course of two hands-on workshops, participants will create and personalize either an Frequency-Modulation synthesizer or a sample-based instrument using the SuperCollider programming environment and Open Stage Control, a browser-based modular OSC/MIDI Controller.

Workshop 4: Conversations on New Music aesthetics and philosophies with Harry Lehmann

Philosopher Harry Lehmann hosts both private and/or group sessions with (young) composers in which they can discuss topics related to their works and situate them in dialogue with his aesthetic theories. Discussions are not required nor limited to be about the participants artistic practice.
